What I am doing for Lent

1. Get up 30 - 45 minutes earlier and spend that extra time reading the bible, praying, reading my Lenten devotional book.
2. Go to Adoration twice a week (one weekday before work and Friday after Stations of the Cross.)
3. Participate in Stations of the Cross every Friday.
4. Fast and abstain on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday and abstain on all Fridays of Lent.
5. Instead of going out for dinner or getting take out like we do every Friday we will cook at home and give the money we saved to either the food bank or our mission in Peru.
6. Go to at least one week day Mass.
7. When I go to the Divine Mercy conference next week I will try to take as much as I can from the experience to share with everyone I meet IRL and in the blogosphere. I am starting a Divine Mercy novena this Friday which will conclude the Saturday of the conference.
8. Spend less time on the computer.

Ashes to ashes

Oh for Pete's sake...you can dress me up but you can't take me anywhere. Went to Mass tonight, received my ashes, sat down. It was so cold in the church I kept my gloves on.

Later during the Consecration I alternated resting my folded hands on my forehead and my chin.

At the Sign of Peace my hubby started snickering at me. I had smeared the ashes from my forehead onto my gloves and then onto my chin. He said it looked like a beard.

Yeah, good way to start Lent - total humiliation!!!!!

Luckily I was wearing a scarf so I cleaned off the "beard." The people behind us were snickering too.

Never again. NO more gloves at Mass!

You can label this: this could only happen to me or the Carolina Cannonball.

Feb. 24, 2009 - Baptism

Please keep M.R.L. in your prayers. She will be baptized at the 7:00 PM Mass Tuesday night. Please keep M. in your prayers. He's her little cousin who will also be baptized. And also please keep N.G.L. in your prayers - she will finally be Confirmed and receive her First Holy Communion.

I was asked to be "co-godmother" but found out tonight that Canon Law prohibits a child from having 2 godparents of the same sex. I am sad - I would have loved to be her godmother but as always I only want to do what is right. I will simply enjoy being part of this wonderful celebration with N.'s family and friends.

Little MRL is wearing the same baptismal dress my sons wore - it's yellowed now but I am sure it will look fine in the photos. I hope to post some photos tomorrow night. Stay tuned!

When you shouldn't confess

Thank you Kalona, Mary Rose and Adrienne. You guys brought tears to my eyes!

Often in spiritual reading I come across advice that says "frequent reception of the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Confession will help you spiritually." But what if your priest thinks you are too scrupulous and tells you that it's not necessary to come to confession with what you think is a mortal sin (according to the examen you have read.)

At the same time he is very vocal about encouraging people to come to confession. I suppose he is addressing the ones that never go, not people like me that go 4 - 6 times a year. I know that venial sins are absolved during the Penitential Rite at the beginning of Mass but are we not allowed to go to Confession for them too?? I don't want to commit a mortal sin just so I can go to confession! (OK, that was a lame attempt at humor.)

We have a Regnum Christi group in our parish that I had considered joining. I met with some of the ladies and they gave me a pamphlet that laid out their guidelines. One of them is bi-weekly confession. I told them I could not join them because my tendency to scrupulosity. They were shocked! Not at my tendency but that I declined the opportunity of bi-weekly confession - it's like they thought I didn't want to go to Confession AT ALL! Not so!

I love my priest and respect him - don't get me wrong. But I am finding it hard to do what is right by God and also listen to my priest (who has far more training and understanding about these things than I do.) There is no other priest available that I can speak to and anyway I LIKE my priest - we are friends, he knows me - but I feel confused.

I don't feel so sad today though. Your prayers are helping.

Pride, scrupulosity and sadness.

How does one accept the mercy of God?

How does one keep from becoming scrupulous?

If one lived in a constant state of mortal sin for many years, repented and confessed, and is presently hyper-aware of sin - is that scrupulosity or is it self preservation?

Could growing up with an absentee father make one less able to accept a merciful God?

I want to please God but I just don't know HOW. I want to give Him my best and be good, truly good but I fail. And fail. And fail. The harder I try the more I fail. I tried praying that morning prayer to consecrate my day to Him but every time I did that one bad thing after another would happen. It was easier to be loving and good when I wasn't trying so hard.

Blog buddies - surely someone out there can help me understand what I am doing wrong. Please help. I feel so sad.

Octo-slam, Mel Gibson and my sewing machine

In honor of the mother of the octuplets, Denny's is offering a new breakfast meal: the octo-slam, you get fourteen eggs, no sausage, and the guy next to you has to pay the bill.

Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk!!!!

*****

Watched Mel Gibson's "Braveheart" tonight. Some of the cinematic devices he uses in that movie echo some of the scenes in "The Passion of the Christ." Heh....looks like Braveheart was Gibson's OT. One of the characters even mentions Moses.

For sale - one sewing machine, slightly used. Don't ask....*&#$@!!!!

Divine Mercy...lullaby?! Yes!

I was babysitting a 10 month old boy today. He is really sweet, has lots of personality but did.not.want.to.go.to.bed. So, I plunked the two of us in the rocking chair, wrapped his blanket around him (he likes it like a pillow on his neck) and hummed about 5 decades of the Divine Mercy chaplet to him. Out like a light. Sweet!

(I hummed the more "upbeat" version - not the dirge like chant you see on EWTN weekdays.)

I'M GOING TO NEW YORK!

Thank you Jesus!!!!!
Thank you Blessed Mother!!!!

Prayers, please...

I just found out that the 4th Annual Divine Mercy Conference will take place March 7 in the Bronx, New York. My beloved Fr. Groeschel will be one of the guest speakers. If I can get the time off work (don't see that as being a problem) and can convince hubby (that might be more difficult LOL!) then I only have to pay the registration fee and flights - I can stay with my family on Long Island for free (well, I will take them out for dinner!)

I love the Divine Mercy and Fr. G is a delight - I am just praying that if Jesus wants me there He will help me get there. Please pray that His will be done. Thank you!

Suicide

If someone attempts suicide (say this person is obviously mentally ill) must they confess this?

The Catechism says: CCC 2352 "To form an equitable judgment about the subjects' moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety, or other psychological or social factors that lessen or even extenuate moral culpability."

I am also wondering if the mentally ill might be more susceptible to being under spiritual attack? If a suicide attempt was made would it be beneficial for that person to be exorcised?

I will be praying my Rosary this week for those who are burdened by thoughts of suicide or who are recovering from an attempt. I will also pray for those who succeeded and those who survived them.

Handmaid of the....

"It is our hope that the Holy Father will not grant the floundering Speaker of the House what she surely wants and expects, a quick and valuable photo-op, but will rather give her a stern lecture on contraception and abortion and let her know that her eternal salvation is in danger," said Fr. Euteneuer." Read the rest of the story here.

Great idea!

I know a young lady who is getting married this year. She told me that instead of favors they are making a donation on the guests behalf to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in honor of the groom's late father.

I think favors are the biggest waste of money and totally useless in the scheme of things. Just don't tell me that H & S supports the abortion industry - I would cry.

If it was MY wedding I'd be donating to the local food bank or Birthright office. Or to our mission in Peru. Actually - imagine throwing a baby shower where all the gifts are donated to a crisis pregnancy center?! Nobody even has to be pregnant - it would just be a fun way to spend the afternoon!

.

Another passage I don't get

Jesus went to the district of Tyre.
He entered a house and wanted no one to know about it,
but he could not escape notice.
Soon a woman whose daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him.
She came and fell at his feet.
The woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth,
and she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter.
He said to her, "Let the children be fed first.
For it is not right to take the food of the children
and throw it to the dogs."
She replied and said to him,
"Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children's scraps."
Then he said to her, "For saying this, you may go.
The demon has gone out of your daughter."
When the woman went home, she found the child lying in bed
and the demon gone.
Matthew 7:24 - 30

V2 Womyn and Theology of the Body

Tonight was the second night of our mission on Theology of the Body. Fr. Matthew Habiger is our speaker. He is dead brilliant!

A couple of "post-V2 womyn" were huddled near the back and one of them asked Father why priests couldn't be married since in Jesus' day they were. (Father had quoted a passage that spoke of Peter's MIL.) He was polite but she knew he was not going to be dragged into debate. He said that the Church discerns these things over time. God meets us where we are and as our understanding develops over time, He leads us more deeply into His plan.

Being the poop disturber that I am, I scribbled out my own question and gave it to the parish secretary to give to Fr. H later so that he could address it tomorrow. On Tuesday we will discuss marriage and TOB.

And you want to know what my question is, don't you?!

I asked: using Theology of the Body can you explain why women can't be priests.

Kim and I were practically jumping up and down in gleeful anticipation! I CANNOT wait until he talks about this tomorrow!

Something else I hadn't realized - there was no celibacy in the OT.

And kookoo question of the day: if the Church is female then is she the spokeswoman or spokesman or spokesperson for Jesus?

Judges 19 - please explain this!

And the Bible reading presses on...! I am one third of the way through now.

I have a question about Judges 19. The men wanted to have sex with the Levite. Instead they gang rape his concubine, she dies and is divided, limb by limb, into 12 pieces. The 12 pieces are then sent around the territory of Israel. I was like....WTH?! Why??

There are such beautiful books in the OT - Ruth comes to mind especially. Then there is Judges. I am very happy Jesus Christ came to save us.

Please explain to me...

...this big kerfuffle about the Pope and Bp. Williamson. I am trying to defend the Pope but I am not really quite sure what to say. Personally I love the Pope and anything he does is fine by me because he is MUCH smarter than I am but I am a bit confused by all this stuff.

.

Saved! But to Evangelical Protestantism??

I know of quite a few people who are extremely devout Christians and also some people that, through the grace of God, have turned away from VERY VERY bad lives and turned toward Christianity, but to Evangelical Protestantism. Why? Why not Catholicism like He did for Fr. Donald Calloway, MIC? It's just as easy for Him, and if Protestantism contradicts some of the Catholic teachings why would God call somebody to that? I know that we are all brothers and sisters in Christ, but it seems like God is working against Himself in calling people to anything other than Catholicism.

Read the answer here.

Kiss me, Baby!

I listened to a very provocative sermon here.

So my question to you is this - should couples kiss when they date? Why or why not?

As an aside - I was watching the Duggars last night. This episode was about the Christmas parade the family participated in. They staged a living nativity scene. I thought it was very well done - except for Joseph (Josh) and Mary (Josh's wife Anna) kissing on the float! Also I was quite tickled to see a nice Baptist girl dressed as the Blessed Mother!

Book recommendation

I just started reading Abp. Chaput's book "Render Unto Caesar."

If the Holy Father is reading this blog I would like to recommend that Abp. Chaput be made a cardinal which would then give him a chance at being Pope someday.

Pansification

Last night hubby and I were watching hockey. Well, lo and behold, next thing you know one of the commentators was interviewing some person of indeterminate gender about another commentators use of the word "pansification." I guess "gay rights" groups were offended by the word.

"Hockey Night
commentator Mike Milbury coined the expression to describe how the NHL would be softened should the league heed calls to ban fighting. He has used "pansification" at least twice on Hockey Night this season, in November and again on Jan. 17. His colleague, Don Cherry, has also made reference to it." (For my non-Canadian readers Don Cherry is about as politically INcorrect as you can get.)

Later on in the broadcast there were several comments made about censorship. These guys were not taking the gay rights group seriously at all.

Earlier in the evening Doug Gilmour's number (he was a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs) was retired. He was introduced along with his children from his first marriage, his fiancee and his new baby daughter.

Thirty years ago this would not have happened. I miss the old days. *sigh*
