Fast away the Old Year passes...

I said to the man
Who stood at the Gate of the Year,
“Give me a light that I may tread safely
into the unknown.”

And he replied,
“Go out into the darkness
and put your hand into the hand of God
That shall be to you
Better than the light
And safer than a known way!”

King George VI started his Chrismas address
to the nation in 1939 with this quote.

Best and Worst

I was reading a forum on the internet where people could post their worst Christmas gifts. I have to say that some mother-in-laws are really nasty and a lot of ex-husbands are really dense (and cheap!)

So, without further ado...share with me your best and worst gifts.

Best - For Christmas 1970 I received a "Thumbelina" doll. When you pulled a string in her back she wiggled and made baby noises.

Worst - For Christmas 2007 I received a clay cooking pot made in China. I am terrifed to use it suspecting that it's full of lead. I shoved it in the back of the cupboard. The previous year the same gift giver gave me an electric juicer which has never been used either. It's too much work to clean it and who can afford fresh juice?!

What about you?

Surfacing

The sun is low at 2:45 PM Christmas Day.

Well, here we are on the other side of Christmas Day. Phew! It was very low key around here as none of the kids came home. We watched Midnight Mass from Rome on EWTN at 3:00 in the afternoon. Actually I was asleep for a good part of it as I had been madly cleaning the house and I was pooped. We were expecting my friend and her husband to visit us around 8:30 PM. Her son and grandson were supposed to arrive around the 22nd but bad weather prevented them from completing the first leg of the trip. My friend was so sad as she had spent weeks getting things ready (cooking, renting a bed, collecting some toys and kids videos.) So I invited them over to share snacks and drinks with us. Except that they had gone to the lake in the afternoon and when Dave got out of the car he slipped on some ice and landed on his head! OUCH! So Mary took him home and was on concussion watch. I am not sure she even made it to Mass. I had the house spotless when I found out they weren't coming. Oh well - it needed to be done and nothing like a looming deadline to spur you on! If only I had spent that much effort preparing for Christ's coming as I did for my guests...

We went to Mass at 7:00 PM Christmas Eve - just can't do the midnight thing anymore. Lots of strangers at Mass. It had been announced before Mass started that Communion was only open to Catholics who were spiritually prepared. I discreetly rolled my eyes...how many years had I considered myself "spiritually prepared" when I was actually in mortal sin. Father needs to say "if you didn't come to Mass last weekend without good reason, you haven't gone to confession in over a year, you are living together with your partner, support abortion or birth control - or any combination of the above - don't bother coming up!"

Usually it's hot as heck at Christmas Mass but the furnace broke down a few weeks ago and it's not going to be fixed. It's 36 years old and needs to replaced which we are doing in the spring. There were some industrial heaters but it was still quite cold. Oh well, it kept everyone awake!

After Mass we came home and had some snacks and drinks and opened gifts. That didn't take long with just two of us. Luke got me a book about the war in Afghanistan. Not sure if I want to read that or not! Nikki got me a bible quiz book which is fun (but protestant - I will have to make some corrections!) My stepson and his wife got me a sweater which was 2 sizes too small (I will take that as a compliment) and has a cable knit pattern on the front which Stacey and Clinton would tell you is all wrong for my body type. *sigh* I didn't even have to put it on to know the gift was a bust. (ahem...no pun intended)

Christmas Day all the kids called and we called my in-laws and my step-mom. I even called my brother - haven't talked to him in about 18 months although we have emailed occasionally. Spoke with my nieces. They are so shy on the phone - not like when we are together in real life! We went for a lovely walk on the little island in the river. It was cold but so good to get some fresh air! We had turkey with all the trimmings and watched "White Christmas" after dinner. I had never seen it before and it was pretty cheesy but cute.

Bundled up for cold - it was about 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

I dragged the table into the living room
for a good view of the tree (as opposed to
the dirty pots and pans in the kitchen!)

Boxing Day I woke up and thought I was going to die. It wasn't food poisoning from the turkey or hubby would have been ill too. I think it was a frozen dairy dessert that I had eaten (to excess) the night before. Throw on top of that the wine, rye and ginger ale, liverwurst, chocolate, cocktail sauce, Brie cheese and the best damn gravy I ever made and....disaster!!! I spent most of the day laying on the couch or in bed or in the ....well, you know.

This morning I felt quite a bit better. I went for a long, slow walk in the snow and sunshine this afternoon. I even saw a bald eagle! Eagles are fairly common in this general area but usually not right in town. I had thought of bringing my camera on the walk but of course left it at home or I'd have posted a picture here.

I am making turkey soup tonight. I think I'll take the tree down tomorrow - it's up one day longer than usual! Thank you to everyone that sent Christmas wishes. I prayed for you and your intentions at Mass.

Starting to feel like Christmas...

I found a channel on my TV that is dedicated to playing 50's and 60's schmaltzy Christmas music 24/7. I am finally starting to feel happy about the season. I know! Call me crazy! (Enough out of you, Terry!!!)

The Tree is Up!

Yesterday I started prepping the living room so I could put up the "shrub." I was pulling furniture out from walls to vacuum underneath, dusting, washing the windows and finding homes for the books, magazines and papers I usually have laying all over the coffee table. That only took about 2 hours....

By the time I finished cleaning the rest of the house and doing laundry I was in no mood to fiddle around with tangled strings of lights so I made the momentous (for me) decision to go out and buy a pre-lit fake tree.

I figured I must have finally become completely unhinged. I mean - who goes to a busy department store at 4:30 PM on a Saturday less than 2 weeks before Christmas?!

Well, I did it. I found the tree within 10 minutes and not only that but it was 50% off! I took it to the cashier figuring there'd be a 15 - 20 minute line up and I was mentally prepared for that. No time like the present to pray a rosary!

There was no line up.

I said to the cashier - you know what - everything is going too well, with my luck I will get the tree home and the lights won't work. She laughed. And they did work. As you can see by the photo!

I am donating my old unlit tree and its string of lights to the church. It seems that someone who has fallen on hard times was looking for a tree. I hope they have a wonderful Christmas!

Top Ten Catholics of 2008 Meme

I have been tagged by Chris

1. Fr. Benedict Groeschel - if he can get through to my husband then he's an even more powerful speaker than I thought!

2. Pope Benedict XVI - I was thrilled when he became pope as I hoping for a clean sweep to rid heresy in the Church. Instead the Holy Father blindsided us with love. Love. Imagine. God is love. B16 - you're good!

3. The people on EWTN that promote, pray, and sing the Divine Mercy chaplet. If they didn't do this I would never have started praying this wonderful and powerful devotion.

4. Shirley Leon - a Native Indian woman who works for reconciliation between residential school survivors and the Catholic Church. She was recently awarded the Pope's Benemerenti Award. I wrote about her here.

5. Fr. Lucien Larre - he returned his Order of Canada medal when infamous abortionist Henry Morgentaler was awarded his.

6. The staff of Madonna House who returned the late Catherine de Hueck Doherty's Order of Canada for the same reason as above.

7. Fr. David who cares for our mission in Peru. He is the epitome of the Joyful Christian!

8. My foster daughter Francisca. She lives in Chile, has MS, is not in good physical shape but she continues to get good grades and radiates God's love.

9. My late friend Max and his family. They are totally broken but remained faithful during the last 15 months of their hellish journey through cancer. Pray for them.

10. My Catholic blogger buddies who make me smile, laugh, weep and rejoice in their own witness to God's love.

I tag Laura, Ma Beck, Terry Nelson, Adoro, Cathy of Alex, Jackie, Mary Rose, Gem, Digi, Therese, Kit, Kat, Adrienne, Clammy, Tara, Kalona and Mel.

My special mission

Dear friends of the parish of Sacred Heart Parish
Please receive our deepest thanks for your solidarity and help in bringing God`s joy, life and happiness to 4000 children, and their parents of the Andes mountains of Peru. We visited eleven places where the children from the different villages congregated to pray, play, and receive their toys, candies, cookies, sweet breads, and hot chocolates. These visits occurred from the 16th of December until the 24th of December.

In these eleven places the children and their parents would gather from various villages. We would arrive and get to work setting things up. Toys, candies, and cookies were unloaded, as well as cooking pots, chocolates, sweet breads, milk, and sugar.

We had some beautiful masses with the children and we also were able to have posadas at night time. Here the children danced around the child Jesus, and placed the child Jesus in a welcoming home.
Then the different games would start: musical chairs, tug of war, dressed the mommy, etc. There were prizes for the winners.
After that the children would receive a bag of cookies, and candy and a toy or stuffed animal.
Then it was line up time for the hot chocolate and sweet bread.

This year was especially nice because many organizations teamed up to make the Christmas celebrations something special for the people.
Thanks to you, our parish of Santiago Apostol was the big contributor. We gave toys, stuffed animals, and candies.
On behalf of the 4000 children and their families here in the Parish of Santiago Apostol in the Andes Mountains, we would like to thank you very much for your care and generosity.
You have made the whole area sense that they are cared for and loved by God and their neighbors.

God Bless you all.
Fr. D.

Christmas Party Memo

Warning- some bad language and other inappropriate stuff to follow....
consider yourself warned !!!

FROM: Pauline, Human Resources Director

TO: All Employees

DATE: 1st November 2008

RE: Christmas Party

I'm happy to inform you that the company Christmas Party will take place

on December 23rd, starting at noon in the private function room at the

Grill House. There will be a cash bar and plenty of drinks! We'll have a

small band playing traditional carols...please feel free to sing along.

And don't be surprised if the MD shows up dressed as Santa Claus! A

Christmas tree will be lit at 1.00p.m. Exchange of gifts among employees

can be done at that time; however, no gift should be over $10.00 to make

the giving of gifts easy for everyone's pockets. This gathering is only

for employees! The MD will make a special announcement at the Party.

Merry Christmas to you and your Family.

Pauline

RE: Holiday Party

In no way was yesterday's memo intended to exclude our Jewish employees.

We recognize that Chanukah is an important holiday, which often coincides

with Christmas, though unfortunately not this year. However, from now on

we're calling it our 'Holiday Party'. The same policy applies to any

other employees who are not Christians. There will be no Christmas tree

or Christmas carols sung. We will have other types of music for your

enjoyment.

Happy now?

Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Pauline.

RE: Holiday Party

Regarding the note I received from a member of Alcoholics Anonymous

requesting a non-drinking table...you didn't sign your name. I'm happy to

accommodate this request, but if I put a sign on a table that reads, "AA

Only", you wouldn't be anonymous anymore!!!! How am I supposed to handle

this? Somebody? Forget about the gift exchange, no gift exchange allowed

now since the Union Officials feel that $10.00 is too much money and

Management believe $10.00 is a little cheap. NO GIFT EXCHANGE WILL BE

ALLOWED.

RE: Holiday Party

What a diverse group we are! I had no idea that December 20th begins the

Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which forbids eating and drinking during

daylight hours. There goes the party! Seriously, we can appreciate how a

luncheon at this time of year does not accommodate our Muslim employees'

beliefs, perhaps the Grill House can hold off on serving your meal until

the end of the party - or else package everything up for you to take home

in a little foil doggy bag. Will that work? Meanwhile, I've arranged for

members of Weight Watchers to sit farthest from the dessert buffet and

pregnant women will get the table closest to the toilets, Gays are

allowed to sit with each other, Lesbians do not have to sit with gay men,

each will have their own table. Yes, there will be flower arrangements

for the gay men's table too. To the person asking permission to cross

dress - no cross dressing allowed. We will have booster seats for short

people. Low fat food will be available for those on a diet. We cannot

control the salt used in the food we suggest those people with high blood

pressure taste the food first. There will be fresh fruits as dessert for

Diabetics; the restaurant cannot supply "No Sugar" desserts. Sorry! Did I

miss anything?!?!?!?!?!

Pauline.

RE: The F******* Holiday Party.

Vegetarian pricks I've had it with you people !!! We're going to keep

this party at the Grill House whether you like it or not, so you can sit

quietly at the table furthest from the "grill of death", as you so

quaintly put it, you'll get your f****** salad bar, including organic

tomatoes, But you know tomatoes have feelings too, They scream when you

slice them. I've heard them scream. I'm hearing the scream right NOW!!

I hope you all have a rotten holiday, drink drive and die.

RE: Pauline Lewis and Holiday Party

I'm sure I speak for all of us in wishing Pauline a speedy recovery, and

I'll continue to forward your cards to her. In the meantime, the

everyone the afternoon of the 23rd December off with full pay.

Custard powder

My American readers are asking what custard powder is. I suppose it's actually an English invention and since Canada is kind of related to England it's part of our culture.

Custard powder is used to make a pudding-like dessert. It is vanilla flavored. It does contain corn starch to thicken it. One must add milk and sugar to it and then cook it - much like pudding. I suppose you could use vanilla pudding mix if you don't have custard powder but I have no idea if the consistency would be correct.

I would be willing to mail you a tin of custard powder - if you are interested leave your name in the comment box and we'll sort something out. You can probably buy it online too from a specialty shop.

Six Things Meme

I've been tagged by several people! I need to blog about Six Things That Make Me Happy.

1. My Christmas shopping is done and I didn't have a meltdown and I only went $90 over budget instead of $300 (like last year...)

2. I love to read. No matter where I am or what is going on, I can enjoy a book. My sports loving husband does not have that option. I mean, when we are flying on a plane he cannot golf. But I can read!

3. My children. They are funny, attractive, popular, smart, and caring. The only thing they got from me was their caring nature. Well, and maybe the attractive part LOL! But I am not terribly smart or funny and I was never, ever popular. I am too weird to be popular - even by weird people's standards.

4. I was born in Holland. It is a conversational ice breaker except when people slag my homeland. Dutch people are very friendly, helpful, and stubborn and are very good at making their homes "gezellig" - which means cozy in a physical and mental way. My coworker is also Dutch and her office is more like a den in someone's home than an office with some family photos and an extra chair. Anyway, if you are Dutch you totally know where I am coming from.

5. Hubby and I have been together almost 14 years. We survived 4 teenagers - 2 of his and 2 of mine. 'Nuff said. They are between 23 - 30 years old now.

6. Anything and everything about the Catholic church, God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Blessed Mother and the saints.

I am tagging anybody that requested a saint in the past month!!!!

Certifiable!

It's official - I'm nuts!

Last week I was invited to a cookie exchange. Basically you bake one dozen cookies for every person that is invited to the party. You bake one type of cookie for everyone. And in return you get a dozen cookies from each person so you go home with an assortment of cookies and presumably your holiday baking is done.

There are 12 people invited to this party!!!! TWELVE!

I was going to make these really cute chocolate and vanilla bear cookies. You roll out little balls of the different doughs to make a head, body and arms and legs. I could not see rolling out 864 little balls of dough!!!!

Then I thought I'd make nut bars. Too expensive.

So I made "snickerdoodles." It's a sugar cookie made with cream of tartar which gives it that distinctive texture. It's then rolled in cinnamon and sugar and baked. It's simple and not too sweet. And I don't think I can ever face one again. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!

Tonight is the party, tomorrow I have TOB and Friday afternoon is our staff party so I may not post again until Saturday but that day I am going to a Catholic Women's League lunch. After that my schedule is clear. Shopping is done except for the earrings I commissioned for Nikki. They should be ready today. Cards are sent. Only the tree left to put up. Nice!

Nikki's earrings will be similar to this style.
The design is a hummingbird.
This is typical West Coast Native Indian art.
You can see more here.
The more traditional designs are
killer whale, frog, bear, raven and wolf.

Ten Devotions for 2009.

This years Patron Saint Devotion was very exciting! I matched 266 people (and one Corgi!) with saints. Most people will probably forget about this devotion but I was privy to some pretty incredible match ups!

Matt Talbot chose a young man with a drinking problem.

St. Walburga, whose bones excrete an oily healing substance, was matched to a Corgi that became deathly ill but survived!

A mother going through the one of the worst traumas a parent can experience received a saint whose symbol is a crown of thorns. This saint is often depicted at the foot of the Cross - where I know this woman is.

And there were other incredible stories as well! Thank you for taking a chance to be part of the communion of saints!

Now without further ado I present the Devotions Draw. I have entered all 266 recipients in a draw for a Special Devotion. And these people are:

The Holy Face of Jesus - Christina, whose saint is Jeanne Frances de Chantal

The Sacred Heart of Jesus - "Mrs. Owen" - Owen, that would be YOUR wife!!!

Eucharistic Adoration - Kathy, whose saint is St. Therese of Lisiuex

First Fridays - Jay, whose saint is Martin de Porres

The Stations of the Cross - Ellen, whose saint is Mariam Baouardy

The Rosary - Michael, whose saint is Francis de Sales

The Immaculate Heart of Mary - Paula in MN's daughter, whose saint is Paulina

The Miraculous Medal - Larry D's 10 year old son

The Divine Mercy - the Father of this Lot

Our Lady of Guadalupe - Dom's 21 year old sister

Saint assignments - Post #39

Slipping in under the wire we have one last family receiving saints for 2009. They are:

Chris - Edith Stein
